Sleeping on the Steenbergse Vliet

The town of De Heen is located on the border of North Brabant and Zeeland, small but nice and known from the regional novels about Merijntje Gijzen. This is the birthplace of camping rafts. In 1998, Jos Akkermans, founder of recreation company Akkermans, introduced this concept and was nominated for the National Tourism Award.

The camping rafts in De Heen are hidden in the reeds of the Steenbergse Vliet and can only be reached by canoe. The rafts are located at a great distance from each other on the banks of the Vliet. You have a wonderful view over the water and see a boat passing here and there and ducks swimming past.

Area

At the departure point you will immediately encounter the monumental lock complex Beneden Sas. This lock is included on the European Union’s list of monuments and is a sight to behold. Climb the Bunkertreppe and enjoy the beautiful view of the surroundings.

If you cross the lock you can spot birds and Scottish Highlanders in the special nature reserve Dintelse Gorzen. Fishermen can also enjoy this camping raft location. Discovery Channel even made a pike-perch special at this location.

De Heen’s camping rafts are located in the most watery part of the Brabantse Wal, a special place in the Netherlands where Brabant kisses Zeeland, a landscape of Allure that is more than worth exploring. An area with unique nature, special monuments and cultural events. The Zeeland coast with its beautiful wide sandy beaches is easily accessible from here.
